Description
Prairie Dropseed, Sporobolus heterolepis, is an excellent, native species that is very heat tolerant, and great for xeriscaping (landscape style which requires little or no irrigation)! A warm season, clump forming grass that gets around 2-3′ high and wide. The green leaves are fine textured and the overall form is arching. In August, the flowers rise above the foliage and have a unique fragrance that some liken to buttered popcorn. As the seed ripens, they elegantly arch over. The foliage turns mostly yellow, and finally a light brown all winter long.
